Acid on the face?

The idea of smearing acid all over your face might sound like a skincare shot to the knee. The reality is, it is actually a great way to boost your skincare regime. In fact, it is one of the most effective ways to get rid of dead cells and keep your skin looking clear, bright, and fresh.

So what is it?

Mandelic acid is an alpha-hydroxy-acid (AHA) derived from bitter almonds, but is more gentle than some of the other AHA’s like glycolic and lactic acid. AHA’s work by exfoliating the layers of dead epidermis away by breaking the bonds between cells.

Why it is so beneficial for your skin?

The pus in infected pores creates a pH of 9 or higher which allows the bad bacteria to thrive. During treatment the pH of our skin pores, hair follicles, and skin surface decreases which kills most of the bacteria responsible for spots and acne. This environment then promotes the growth of beneficial bacteria bringing the skin environment back into balance.

Anti-ageing

Mandelic acid is the go-to anti-ageing ingredient in the world of skincare. It works to accelerate cell turnover by dissolving the tiny bonds that hold skin cells together, helping to remove dead skin on the surface that can lead to dull complexions, as well as fine lines. It also strengthens collagen one of the building blocks of the skin’s support network that gives it youthful firmness.

Hyperpigmentation and Discolouration

Mandelic acid has been shown to reduce light to dark brown or greyish pigmentation called melasma on the face by 50% in four weeks, resulting in a more evenly coloured complexion. I also successfully use Mandelic acid as a part of my bespoke hand skin rejuvenation.

Acne

Mandelic acid’s antibacterial properties are extremely helpful in treating acne. It also helps to regulate sebum production and narrows wide pores. This results in a decrease of the occurrence of breakouts. Mandelic acid has even been shown to benefit those who suffer from cystic acne.

Skin-care regime

Mandelic acid is so effective and safe that you can introduce it to your regular skin-care regime if your skin is dull, tired or simply shows some cycle-related imperfections. It is recommended especially for combination skin with black heads, blocked pores and some spots occurring on the forehead and chew lines.
